Workshop # 1 - Digital Architecture for the Polar Portal Outreach Project
Date: 20/07/22
Time: 11:00 – 17:00 (London Time), lunch provided
Location: The Alan Turing Institute (British Library), The Enigma Room
Workshop Aim
Establish a data pipeline for constructing a digital journal, which captures the journey of polar explorers who carry Polar Postcards on their Antarctic expeditions.
Workshop Agenda
The aim of this workshop is to conceptualise a data pipeline for a polar explorer’s geotagged digital diary which can be shown on a map. Crucially, this pipeline will be automated, capturing our polar explorers’ data and processing it before postcards reach school children in the UK. Complexities lie in limited access to wifi in Antarctica, and the timescale of polar explorers travelling to Antarctica in November. The architecture will be scalable and self-sustaining, so the scope of this outreach can easily be expanded beyond our first year of work with one selected London inner-city school. The Polar Impact team require technical support from the ATI community to automate this data processing, to develop tools for QR code tracking, and to expand the project’s augmented reality concept.
Participants’ skills and interests may include: GIS, automating data input processes, data transformation, software development, data visualisation, AR, science outreach to schools.
