I’m Ziad Rashed!
Hi everyone! My name is Ziad Rashed and I'm a Ph.D. student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I was born in Giza, Egypt but received most of my education in the United States. I completed my bachelor's degree in engineering physics and wanted to apply my education to the Earth Sciences and I was particularly fascinated by glaciers and ice sheets. My research focuses on ice-ocean interactions with a focus on calving and ice-mélange and their associated feedbacks which inform projections of sea level rise!
Growing up in North Africa, I was not aware of the existence of glaciers and ice sheets prior to my college education.
The ever-increasing importance of addressing the effects of climate change drew my attention to the cryosphere and the effects global warming would have on polar and low sea-level communities which would be disproportionately affected by rising sea levels. This inspired my research direction and my personal commitment to community outreach.
I am inspired by my peers and younger generations in addition to my mentors and advisor who have offered me invaluable knowledge and guidance throughout my studies.
I hope my work inspires others and shows that Polar Scientists can hail from anywhere in the world, even places where there is rarely snow.
