I’m Chi Onuora!
I’m Chi Onuora, and I’m the Learning Producer at the National Maritime Museum. I manage a schools programme using the museum collections to learn about Polar regions and our connections with them.
I was born in a village in Nigeria where we spent a lot of time outside, we grew most of our fruits and vegetables so it was a really different life. My mum is British so we moved to England at the age of 5 where we lived by the Sea.
I studied archaeology and trained to be a primary school teacher at University and always loved learning about other cultures. Archaeology and teaching really allowed me to combine my fascination of Art history and sciences.
My connection to nature pushed me into yoga which I loved so much I train to teach and taught at retreats in India a number of times before getting my current job at the National Maritime Museum.
I've been really interested the Co curation projects that took place during the creation of the new Polar World's Gallery at the museum and working more closely with Arctic communities.
This is something we want to bring into our Polar archives schools sessions by focusing on how Inuit culture has helped non native people to better understand extreme Arctic conditions.
We are also trying to share experiences of more diverse people such as Olaudah Equiano and Matthew Henson.
